The Frank Costanzo Scholarships honors the legacy of Past National President Frank Costanzo, a dedicated Alpha Phi Delta brother from Nu Chapter. Established through two generous donations totaling $20,000—one in 1994 and another in 2000—this scholarship reflects Brother Costanzo’s lifelong commitment to the fraternity and his legacy of leadership and service.
Frank Costanzo was born on September 25, 1911, in Steubenville, Ohio, and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1933 with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. As a member of Alpha Phi Delta’s Nu Chapter, he served as Vice President, setting the foundation for a lifelong dedication to Alpha Phi Delta and his profession. As an alumnus, Costanzo led the Pittsburgh Alumni Club as President and served as National Vice President in 1954 and 1955. He was elected National President in 1956 and served a second term in 1957. Recognized for his contributions, he received the Outstanding Alumnus Award in 1952 and chaired the Expansion Committee for the Western Area, contributing to the fraternity’s growth and success.
Professionally, Costanzo was a specialist in corrosion, holding prominent roles with the Mellon Institute’s Utility Survey Commission and Columbia Gas System’s Pittsburgh Group Companies. He served as a director of the National Association of Corrosion Engineers, where his expertise was highly respected. Additionally, Costanzo served his country with distinction as a Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Army Ordnance Department, dedicating over thirty years to active and reserve service, including commanding the 2201st Research and Development Unit and participating in overseas assignments during World War II in New Caledonia, Guadalcanal, and the Solomon Islands.
Frank and his wife, Augustine (Gussie), shared over 60 years of marriage, attending National conventions together until the mid-1990s. Frank was also one of the earliest trustees of the Alpha Phi Delta Scholarship Fund, contributing to the fraternity’s mission to support and inspire future generations of brothers. He passed away on June 6, 2009, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of fraternity loyalty, professional achievement, and service to his country.
The Frank Costanzo Scholarship continues to honor his memory and dedication to Alpha Phi Delta by supporting the educational pursuits of outstanding fraternity brothers, ensuring that his legacy lives on in the leaders of tomorrow.
