Richard Rau Memorial

Scholarship

Established:
1987
Annual Award:
$1,000
Fund Amount:
$25,450

This scholarship was established in memory of Beta Sigma brother Richard Rau.  Richard Rau, a former chapter Vice-President of Beta Sigma, met with a fatal accident while attending the 1970 National Convention as a chapter delegate.  It brought a very sad ending to an otherwise excellent convention.

Richard Rau was born on January 13, 1950 in New York City and was a graduate of St. Agnes High School.  He enrolled at St. Francis College in Brooklyn where he majored in Accounting and was a Dean's List student.

Richard was a dedicated supporter and driver for chapter and district events.  He had a great interest in the Fraternity's national affairs.  He was one of nine Brothers of Beta Sigma who attended the mid-year meeting of 1970 in Steubenville, Ohio, a long road trip for a mid-year meeting for the undergraduates.

In 1987, Richie’s family and friends established the Richard Rau Memorial Fund, which was transferred to the Alpha Phi Delta Foundation in 1989. Since 1990, the Foundation has awarded an annual scholarship in Richie’s memory. Alumnus Sandy Lofaso, Beta Sigma 1967 -  Richie’s godfather, brother, and friend from their chapter - has made it his personal mission to grow this scholarship and honor Richie’s legacy. The scholarship has been set at the $1,000 level for the past 10 years, and with support, we can help Sandy elevate it to the next level and expand its impact.
